Ways to Celebrate the 4th of July

There are lots of fun ways to celebrate Independence Day...parades, cookouts, and flying our flag.

Some other great ways might include:

~watching a movie like, The Patriot...you know, the one with Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger.
~reading a book about our country...
Founding Fathers, by M.E. Bradford and
1776by David McCullough, are excellent...
~researching your family tree to see if one, or more, of your ancestors were patriots.

If you know your ancestor's name, a good source for information  is the website of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
Click here to find out about the organization, and how search their free online search database.

Records related to Delaware's involvement in the Revolutionary War.

Some of you may know...or not know...that I'm a genealogy nut.
I've researched every branch of my family tree...and no, my tree doesn't have just one branch...a bit of genealogy humor there. :)

Anyway, I've known for a long time, that several of my ancestors had fought in the Revolutionary War; and recently, I visited the DAR site again, to see who else, in my line, might have served. I knew that all of my known ancestors had come to America before the war, so they had to be involved in some way.

I hope you don't think I'm bragging...well, maybe I am...but, I was so pleased to find that I had at least nine patriots in my line, and I'd like to honor them by listing their names below:

James Allen, Sr.
James Allen, Jr.
Moses Beard
Adam Calhoun, Sr.
John Cunningham
Bry Gregory
Thomas Gregory
Stephen Lockett
Michael Uhl
Christopher Walthall

I'm so thankful for all our American Revolutionary War patriots, and their families, who sacrificed so much, to give us the United States of America.
Wishing y'all a very...

                        Happy Independence Day!

I think that is so neat that you know so much about your ancestors! I wish I knew more about mine. You should be proud to have so many in your family that served our country to help bring us the freedom we know today.

That is so interesting that you had so many ancestors in the Revolutionary War. Most of mine immigrated from Europe in the mid to late 1800's.

I love how you mentioned your ancestors who were patriots! I did that last year and think I will do the same this year because if it was not for them.....

Babs, This is a beautiful post. I know you must be honored to learn about your family and to have so many patriots in the family.
Thank you for this touching post and reminder of the miracle that we experience every day.
Happy Independence Day!

PS: I would like to talk with you sometime about how to start a family search. I don't have a clue.

Blessings, Ginger

I love the B52-s too! And that is such a great song, every time it comes on I turn the volume up as loud as I can stand it and sing it out! Ahh, good times:)_ We were actually heading to the train station because my daughter and her husband were taking a train to Virginia. A few years ago my husband and I took a train to New Orleans. It's the only way I want to travel now! We had a little roomette, just perfect!

What a GREAT post! I love your ideas for celebrating the day. We read the Declaration aloud at ours. We've never done it before and now think it should be a holiday tradition.

I'm a proud member of the DAR so I'm giving you big huzzahs for having so many patriots. I'm also a genealogy buff and can spend hours just reading.

So far, I have four patriots. My dad is a second generation immigrant so he can't "help" there. I have found two more on the husband's line so far for the daughters to claim. Like you, I just think it's cool to do.

Again, I LOVED this post and am glad to find a genealogy soul sister.

Babs~ I think it's wonderful you have so much genealogy knowledge! I wish I knew more of our, unfortunately my father doesn't know or have record to go back more than one generation! Happy Belated Fourth to you and your patriot family :)
