A Southern Ploughman's Lunch

A few days ago, I found four "Friendly Village" plates at my local antique mall...great price, plus, they had the "made in England" stamp on the back. Yay!
When I brought them home, I was going to store them till Fall, but then, I looked at the scenes and realized they are Spring and Summer scenes...duh!

The more I looked at them, the more I thought of my granddaddy's farm, and how he plowed the fields with a mule...

Are you still with me? Hang in there... there is an end to this story...
Where was I?  Oh, then I remembered the traditional Ploughman's Lunch post I did last year.

To make a long story short, I combined two of the Friendly Village farm scene plates, with memories of my Southern granddaddy, and came up with the idea for a Southern Ploughman's Lunch...Whew!


Here's what's being served...
...pork tenderloin, a bit of cheddar, and instead of the usual Branston pickle, we're having chow chow...

...sometimes, a Ploughman's is served on a board, but this time I used my ironstone platters...


...fried green tomatoes...sliced Vidalia onion, and pickled okra.


Instead of the traditional crusty bread, we're having biscuits..


...served with lots of butter and peach preserves.


...and instead of a lager or beer, my Southern Ploughman's is washed down with several glasses of iced tea.







I'll bet that some of my friends from England, who know what a real Ploughman's is, are wondering "what in the world..."?  


 Anyway, I hope y'all enjoyed our Southern Ploughman's lunch. I picked what few flowers I could find...vinca and poke weed.
That's about all that's left after all this hot dry weather. 
Today, it's rained off and on all day and I'm doing the happy dance.

    Your Ploughman's lunch looks delicious! But what really caught my eye was your Friendly Village plates. I am collecting the pattern too but I have never run across the spring and summer scenes. How beautiful they are! They also remind me of my days on my Grampy's farm. Great find! Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful weekend.

    Saw where it had rained in Georgia and prayed that you were spared from the storms!!! Love your luncheon!!!What a great find on your plates, too! Peach preserves is my FAVORITE for biscuits and PBJ's!!! Enjoy that luncheon with your special MR.!

Hi Babs thanks for stopping by my blog I thought I would come by and check yours out and was tickled pink to see your beautiful transferware than the ploughmans lunch Southern Style what a treat- my and dh eat those often in fall and winter after seeing The Barefoot Contessa do one on her show.   11. The plates are just lovely, Babs, and your Ploughman's lunch has my mouth watering -- especially the biscuits! My gramma made such great biscuits, but I never got the recipe (insert sad face).

    Hope you continue to get some rain. We had some yesterday, & more is predicted today & tomorrow. I may do an Indian Rain Dance!

  17. I remember the first time my husband and I went to England. The first pub we ate at I saw Ploughman's lunch on the menu. I gave it a try and was hooked!

  21. I love the southern version. If I head out right now, I can be in your neck of the woods in about four hours, I think. Think there will be any fried green tomatoes left by the time I get there?
