This morning I went outside to look around the yard, and I noticed the moss was fresh and green from all that rain. I love moss and thought of pots of moss..yep, that's what popped into my head...Pots of Moss! Go figure!
I had a couple of small clay pots lying around under the deck, so I scraped some moss from the yard with a metal spatula, filled the pots with potting soil, and arranged the moss on top.
I left them plain for a while, and then decided to decorate them...one with a stone, and the smaller one with twigs. I really wish I had three pots the same size, but I didn't, so I just used what I had for today.
Since I had some extra moss, I put some in one of my little cabbage demitasse cups. The little blue flowers were blooming by the deck steps, and I tucked them in the center of the moss. I don't think they'll last too long since they were cut, but I love the look, and I'll enjoy them while they last.
I just had to try the cup under the cloche, and it really looked like Spring, even though it's still January.
The little blue flowers are Georgia Blue Speedwell.
Another scrap of moss went into a votive holder from DT.
I "sacrificed" one of my heart shaped candies for the photo.
Do you think the "20-second-rule" applies to candy on moss? Well, just to be on the safe side, I'll toss it in the trash later.

Babs, this is a great idea! I tried growing mosses one year, but I think it's just too warm here. Perhaps I need to think about trying it in the winter. LOL

And wow, you have the Daphne odora! We used to have one, it bloomed for one year and it died... Too hot here in central Georgia. Don't know where you are located but obviously at a better area.

Our entire front lawn over at our old house is nothing but moss....when our landscaper from the new house went over to transplant some azalea bushes he was so excited about the moss being everywhere....He said to the people in CHina this is the best thing you can have...I hope when we put the house up for sale we can say we have a "rare Chinese Moss Lawn".....what do you think?

ReplyDeleteI was so glad to see your post, now I know I am not crazy. I do this every year-I am always anxious for spring and I fill a huge bowl with moss for my dining table.I haven't done mine yet, it has been almost nonstop raining and muddy here. With a nice weekend coming up, I need to get to moss hunting.

There are some venues getting big bucks from selling potted moss right now :) I love how they look. All I could pot would be snow right now.

ReplyDeleteI thnk this is fabulous! I love to decorate with natural elements when possible, and this is fabulous! I don't think I've ever seen any moss growing around here anywhere, though. I might have to go into the woods about a mile from here to find some. Scary! :-) It has been dry as a bone here (39 days and counting), so no moss for us for awhile!!! Glad the rain has let up for you there! Enjoy your weekend!

ReplyDeleteAdorable! Love the idea! The moss will grow if kept moist! I'd be hard pressed to find moss right now with a foot of snow out there on the ground! Obviously you live somewhere much warmer than me! The little cup filled up under the moss is too sweet!

I've done this, myself, and it's both economical and pretty! As far as concern for any "critters" coming in with the moss- there would be no more than on any plant being brought in from outside. You just have to use some common sense and some observation skills. I can't wait for spring to makes its appearance- greenery at this time of year brightens our outlook. :-) Luv the sticks in the pot. Very natural...

ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you posted about this! I adore moss and was just wondering if I could get some to live inside. I passed a patch of wonderfully, thick, lush moss as I was driving down the road yesterday and was itching to dig some up! Great minds must think alike! ;0)

Hi Babs! Thanks for your really kind comments. I taught myself to embroider a few years ago. Then I found a very talented lady and I took a couple of online classes from her. My sampler will be added to all the others, I have about 8 now, for me to refer to when I'm doing my quilt, get ideas and such.
