Kitchen Island Project

The kitchen island is finished...almost

This is the new look...

Here's the before with Hubby sanding it on the deck.

Umpteen years ago, we bought the island from a furniture store that was going out of business, and although it was a great price, perfect in size and style, the light color didn't work well with the kitchen hutch.

I'd always planned to do something with it...paint, darker stain..something, but never could make up my mind what I wanted to do. You know, one of those things you just keep putting off.

After so many years, the top developed a "worn patina"; and the other day, Hubby couldn't stand it any longer, got out the sander, and the project was off and running. We didn't have any paint or stain that would work so, we headed off to Home Depot!

We wanted a paint and stain that would work with the floors, cabinets and the hutch. The color is more cream than it actually looks in the photo.

The paint color is Rust-Oleum Heirloom White, and the stain is Varathane stain plus poly, in "paprika".

Here's the kitchen/breakfast hutch I was trying to match. This photo is from a post in January. Click here in case you missed it.

After three coats of paint and one coat of clear sealer, it started raining, so we had to haul it back in the house. You wouldn't believe how heavy that little island is.
Anyway, I wanted to show you how it turned out, so I put a few cookbooks on it, and did a quick photo.

The only other thing I want to do, other than put a second coat of sealer on, is to put a towel bar on the right side.

And, although I'm thinking about doing a glaze on it, I'm going to take my time deciding about that. I'm terrible at doing faux painting techniques. :)
What do you think? Should I try a glaze, or leave it like it is?

Hugs, and y'all have a great week.

Oh I love it. I'm not really wild about a lot of the glaze finishes, I think this looks amazing. Hugs, Marty

I love how it turned out! I like it as it is without the glaze. It matches your cabinets this way (or it appears). You could live with it this way for now and decide later. I think a towel bar on the side would be great, though!

Babs, I'm in the minority here- I'd be adding some dark wax or a light glaze if this was mine! I love heirloom white and use it often if my accessories projects. But I always add a bit of dark on top of it. It might just be enough of a change so that everything is not "matchy-matchy" in your room. Will be curious to see what you do. :-) Sue

Hello Babs, I love what you have done, personally I wouldn't glaze it as I think it looks great the way it is....the island looks so fresh and that's what I love. Is your red transfer ware Spode? Enjoy the rest of your day. Best Wishes Daphne

I love that your island has an open display area. That's what I'm totally lacking in my kitchen. A towel bar is also a brilliant idea. I may have to copy you on that one! Hope all is well. I have been sewing like mad and loving it. I had gigantic doubts last month when school started and I wasn't there. Those have now passed and I'm feeling more settled. I hope to get back on track with my blog visiting. I have missed you.

Oh, I think it looks fabulous as is! And isn't spray paint the best ever?!? I've just discovered the joys myself ...
