What Color Should the Frame Be?

Hi, everyone. I hope y'all had a great weekend.
I recently picked up this egret picture at the thrift store. I love it, but I can't decide what to do with the frame.
Y'all always have the best ideas, and I really need your help.

The overall size is about 17x19.
I haven't decided where I want to put it yet, but here it is, on the living room wall.
Sorry about the glare. It's been overcast all day, so I had to turn on the lights to photograph it.

Here it is on the wall in the guest room.

The frame needs a few minor repairs, since it's separating a little at the corners. Also, someone painted the frame without taking the glass out, and there are some paint smudges on the glass.

Here's the frame detail, showing how it's painted white with a turquoise/blue glaze.

The outer mat is brown, the middle mat is black and the inner mat is  metallic gold.

The paint is chipped on the frame, and it looks like the finish was originally gold

So ... since I'm going to take the picture apart for cleaning and repairs, I thought I'd change the frame color.

Do you think the frame would look better in an antique gold, which it seems to have been originally, or should I try something different?

Maybe a different shade of cream ... or maybe gray?
Should I try to strip the paint off to see what's underneath?

Thank you so much for your input. I'm really looking forward to hearing your suggestions.
Hugs,
Babs

I actually like the frame, the mat may be a little dark. I'm sure it's going to look fabulous!

I love the print and three mats, score! Babs I’m usually the one asking these questions. I think after you decide where you want to hang the picture you can best decide on the color. I actually love the color, it picks up the color of the bird, just maybe not with a turquoise glaze. I think whatever you decide will be right. Your have great taste Babs. Look forward to the end results.

Babs, this is a lovely piece. I'd go with a gold frame to pull out the inner gold mat and the golds in the image. I also like it against the rust colored wall paint. '-)
Have a great week........Sarah

You know when I first saw your picture, I was thinking the frame might look good painted in a metallic gold. I think it's because of the colors of the mats. You probably should decide what room you're going to use it in first though. That's what I would do. I think you'll be able to decide better with what it needs to coordinate with. That's a nice find!

I would use gold.

I like a white frame. I like gold too if it is antique-y enough and not bright.

Babs my vote is gold...I bet Annie Sloan's gilders paste in antique gold would work beautifully on that frame!

I would be inclined to try some gold highlights. I discovered a "fan brush" that works nicely to add whispy accents. It's a great picture!

I like it as it is on the first wall. Not so much on the pale wall. If I were to change it for another wall I would go with antique gold.

Babs,
I'd said go for the GOLD, dear friend!!!
Second choice a burnished bronze...in keeping with your gorgeous Traditional furniture!!!
I'll be back to see what you choose!
The print with the multiple matings is splendid!!!
Fondly,
Pat

I love the aged gold idea, too! Then again, I'm partial to anything gilded. :) Thanks for stopping by my blog this week! Hugs!

Good Afternoon Babs, Mmmm, decisions, decisions! I think I would paint the frame antique gold. It will be fun to see which colour you choose and to see the finished product.
Have a lovely day,
Best wishes

Hi Babs, My opinion is worth exactly what you pay for. Nada, but I kinda like the frame, maybe just a gold wash. The larger mat is a little dark to me. Maybe pick up the blue in the pic. Get a coupon and see if a ready cut mat would work. When I see the egrets here, on the island, they are always surrounded by the beautiful blue water in the lagoons. Natural beauties.
You got a great deal on the pic. They fetch a pretty price here.
