Making this wreath was trial and error, because even though I've made wreaths before, not many were dried ones.
I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, even with a tiny "miscalculation".
Here's how I made it.
My cousin, Betty, suggested using a straw wreath and floral pins.
Thanks, Betty! That worked out much better than hot glue would have.
I bought a 14 in. straw wreath and two packs of U-shaped floral pins.
I started around the outside edge, overlapping the pieces, and pinning each piece.
I realized, when I got almost all the way around the outside edge, that I didn't have nearly enough dried DM to finish the whole wreath...story of my life!
Now you know why I don't do crafts much.
So, I headed back to the garden and cut every last top off the DM plants that were left.
I wasn't about to wait two more weeks for them to dry, so I started pinning them on. I wanted to get it done now!
Hopefully, the wreath will still look full when it dries. I saved several pieces, just in case some bare spots show.
Note: It's sooo much easier working with the fresh Dusty Miller.
In this pic you can see the edge with dried, and toward the front is the fresh.
You can hardly tell the difference. I'm just hoping it dries well and doesn't get moldy. I'll let you know if anything weird happens.
So you'll have an idea of how much DM it took...I had 15 plants and it took almost all of the tops for the wreath, but it only took one pack of floral pins.
After I took the pics, I decided to lay the wreath down to dry. I'm thinking it might droop if it dries while it's hanging. Wish me luck.
Next time...a few more Fall things. I'm gettin' there.

Babs, its gorgeous! I hope it dries well. You did a great job with it, can't wait to see how it turns out.

What a great idea! It turned out so pretty and I bet the DM will dry right there on the wreath. :)
I love your wreath. I didn't buy dusty miller this year but most years I do.
THAT IS BEAUTIFUL!! Oh, how I wish I had some dusty miller around here. Ever since you first mentioned that you could dry it, I have wanted to do that. I really love that wreath. I think you are right about letting it dry flat, at least at the very beginning.
It's so pretty! I've never seen a DM wreath...love it! Thanks so much for sharing at AMAZE ME MONDAY...
Blessings,
Cindy
Love what you have done with your wreath. We are getting ready for summer.
Lots of blessings from South Africa
I know nothing about drying them or how well they hold up but at this point it looks great!
It turned out great, and I commend you for even jumpin' in there and trying to do it in the first place!!! I'm a big ol' chicken when it comes to crafts. I admire what other people do, but I'm leery about trying it for myself for fear (DEEP, paralyzing fear!) of failure. Your wreath is definitely not a failure!!! Way to go, Babs!
I love your handmade wreath! I've never seen dusty miller used that way before but love the look of it.
Your wreath turned out beautifully!! It looks great on your fireplace!
Very pretty, Babs! Love the look!
Hi Babs! Oh, your dusty miller wreath is just gorgeous. I didn't know you could dry that plant! Your fireplace area looks good and good luck with the continued drying.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Wow. Looks top notch and I've never seen one before. Impressive.
It turned out beautiful! I might try that since I've got some dusty miller in the garden.
Babs, I really like the looks of it! I would never have thought to make one out of Dusty Miller. I have a lot of it in my planters. I think I will pick it and try making one. Wondering, did the dried ones feel really brittle and will they break easily? I may just do it fresh and see what happens. Let me know how your fresh ones did would ya? thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
Last year at our Xmas wreath making event, I brought along some dusty miller plants to add to the greens -boy, they sure made my wreath pop! The combination of evergreen and the touches of pale DM fronds were lovely...next year I'll put in many more plants to loot in the fall!
